When I saw this book in Maranatha Christian Bookshop in Uxbridge, I picked it up out of curiosity and read the introduction, by which time I was hooked. It begins by telling the old story of The Little Matchgirl. It is a bittersweet tale, like that of Christmas itself.

The poor, undernourished little matchgirl strikes a match and staring at its brief blaze of light she imagines that she is welcomed into the warm family home that she can see through the lighted window... I won't spoil it by telling you the whole story.

Margaret Silf uses this tale to introduce the idea of looking through windows into the Christmas story, hence the title: Lighted Windows. The weeks of Advent are spent catching Glimpses of Guidance, Trust and Wisdom before Entering the Mystery in Christmas week and then the Windows become Doors as we are challenged to live out our faith in the Son of God born as a baby in Bethlehem.

Lighted Windows is a book of daily readings for the seasons of Advent and Christmas. It is a great way to remember what Christmas is really all about. When all about you are completely wrapped up in the trimmings, then take the time to read a couple of pages a day and to get in touch once again with the real reason for the season.

For each day from Advent Sunday until the Feast of Epiphany on January 6th there is a Bible passage, a comment on it, questions to help us reflect on it and a short prayer. The aim is to help each one of us to reflect on God's story and how it impacts on our story, to help us become more aware of 'God with us', Emmanuel.
